Costa Rica Triumphs in Nicaragua Border Dispute

Costa Rica News – Costa Rica triumphed in the International Court’s review and decision at the trial for maritime limits with Nicaragua. And really, was there any doubt? If Ortega’s own people don’t matter to him obviously respecting borders matters much less. He was after oil and his own agenda.

One of the deciding factors was looking at the ruling issued by the same court in The Hague three years ago over part of the exact same issue. In that instance, Costa Rican sovereignty was recognized on the northern tip of Calero Island.

So, big surprise…the court decided to stick to its original ruling. Why was it even wasting time considering it again? The difference this time is that the case was not just about Calero but about broader maritime limits on both coasts.

Nicaragua did have a sandbar in its name on Calero but it has disappeared due to geographical changes. The ICJ determined the vicinity of the sandbar to be a “Nicaraguan enclave in the territory of Costa Rica.”

The now official boundaries start at the mouth of the San Juan River and not at Punta Castilla, 3 km further south, as Nicaragua hoped for.
